Best NBN 50 plan

Dodo nbn50 Unlimited Plan

🔥 Deal: Save $21.20/mth: $53.80 for first six months, then $75/mth. Offer ends: 31 July 2023

How we picked this plan:

  • We ranked NBN 50 plans with unlimited data by price and selected the cheapest one.

Dodo has made its way to the top of our picks thanks to the limited-time deal on NBN 50 (NBN Standard). Until 31 July 2023, you can save $21.20 per month on Dodo's nbn50 Unlimited plan. That brings the usual $75 monthly price down to $53.80 per month for the first six months. Dodo offers the maximum potential download speeds for NBN Standard (50Mbps) and bundling deals for existing (or future) Mobile or Energy customers.

It's a month-to-month deal too. So if doesn't work out for you, you're free to cancel at any time without incurring any additional costs. See how it compares against some more popular internet plans from WhistleOut's comparison engine below.

Best NBN 25 plan

Tangerine Value Unlimited

🔥 Deal: $44.90/month for first 6 months, then $59.90/month

How we picked this plan:

  • We ranked NBN 25 plans with unlimited data by price and selected the cheapest one.

Tangerine continues to offer its long-running promotional discount and some great perks like a 14-day zero-risk trial and a strictly no-contract arrangement.

Normally priced at $59.90 a month, new sign-ups pay a reduced $44.90 monthly fee in the first six months for the Tangerine Standard Speed Unlimited plan. If you wanted to go even cheaper, you could sacrifice another 10Mbps for Spintel's Unlimited Entry plan, but that would bring you down to a rather slow 15Mbps.

Best NBN 100 plan

Dodo NBN 100 Unlimited Plan

🔥 Deal: $63.80/mth for first 6 months, then $85/mth. Offer ends: 31 July 2023

How we picked this plan:

  • We ranked NBN 100 plans with unlimited data by price and selected the cheapest one.

The Dodo nbn100 Unlimited Plan has scored high marks as our pick for the best fast NBN 100 plan this month, thanks in part to its year-round value and steeply discounted promo pricing.

If you sign up for this particular unlimited internet plan today, you'll save $21.20 per month on the usual price of sticking with that. That discount brings the cost of this internet plan down to just $63.80 per month, which it makes it the cheapest NBN 100 unlimited plan in our database. What's more, you can save a further $10 per month if you already have (or decide to bundle) an electricity or gas connection from Dodo.

To see how Dodo's NBN 100 plan stacks up when it comes to speed, check out more of the fastest internet plans below (according to self-reported typical evening speeds).

Best NBN 250 plan

Exetel SuperFast NBN250

Note: This category is reserved for eligible homes serviced by NBN Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) or Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) technologies.

🔥 Deal: SAVE $150 over 6 mths! $83.95/mth for the first 6 mths then $108.95/mth.

How we picked this plan:

  • We ranked NBN 250 plans with unlimited data by price and selected the cheapest one.

NBN 250 plans don't come cheap, usually hovering between $90 and $100 per month, but Exetel's SuperFast NBN 250 plan  gives customers the opportunity to experience Superfast (NBN 250) speeds for $83.95 per month.

That price will last you six months, after which you will pay $108.95 per month onoging, but the plan also includes five Speed Boost days per month. These allow you to temporarily upgrade your connection to what you could be getting from one of Extel's NBN 500 internet plans.

Best NBN 1000 plan

Best Ultrafast NBN plan: Aussie Broadband Ultrafast Unlimited

Note: This category is reserved for eligible homes serviced by NBN Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) or Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) technologies.

🔥 Deal: $129.90/month for first 12 months, then $149.90/month.

How we picked this plan:

  • We ranked NBN 1000 plans with unlimited data by price and selected the fastest one.

If you're after NBN 1000, we're going to assume that speed is your first priority. That's why we've chosen the reliable Aussie Broadband Home Ultrafast Unlimited as our top pick. It's far from the cheapest option but it does promise some of the fastest typical evening download speeds for NBN 1000 in our engine (an honour shared by Origin). Aussie also offers award-winning customer care and no-contract month-to-month plans so cancelling won't cost you a cent if you decide that Ultrafast NBN isn't for you.

Most popular Telstra NBN plan

Telstra Upfront Internet Plan Premium 100/20

Please note the plan above may change daily based on the most popular Telstra NBN plans.

🔥 Deal: $100/month for first 6 months, then $110/month

How we picked this plan:

  • We ranked Telstra NBN plans with unlimited data by price and selected the most popular one.

At the start of the month, Telstra NBN users have kept their need for speed high again by opting for an NBN 100 plan, which is the typically popular NBN choice.

The Telstra Upfront Internet Plan Premium typically costs $110 a month for 100Mbps download speeds (available to FTTP and HFC homes). But Telstra has six months of promotional pricing at $100 per month. This Telstra plan comes with a Telstra Smart Modem 3, three months of Telstra Device Security, plus two months of Binge Standard and three months of Apple TV+.

Most popular Optus NBN plan

Optus Plus Everyday Superfast NBN 240/22

🔥 Deal: $89/mth for first 6 mths on Optus Plus Everyday Superfast nbn plan (normally $119/mth)

How we picked this plan:

  • We ranked Optus NBN plans with unlimited data by price and selected the most popular one.

Please note the plan above may change daily based on the most popular Optus NBN plans.

In recent months, Optus NBN users have been embracing the ‘faster is better’ mantra of Telstra NBN customers. This month has seen a return to the Optus Plus Everyday Superfast NBN plan. This NBN 240 plan boasts 240Mbps download speeds. Additionally, the December 2022 ACCC data suggests you can expect 22Mbps upload speeds as well as 2.5ms latency. The included Optus Ultra WiFi Modem (with 4G backup) is no extra cost if you stick with this plan for 36 months.

What to look for in an NBN plan

If you're looking for a new NBN plan, there are the major and minor factors you'll want to consider before you make the decision to sign up.

  • Download speeds: The faster the download speed, the speedier your connection. Unless you live alone or in a home with a couple of people who don’t really use the internet all that much, it’s best to start with NBN 50 and work up. These plans aren’t much more expensive than NBN 12 and NBN 25 plans, but they are a lot faster.
  • Upload speeds: Upload speeds tend to be a secondary consideration, but for those interested in faster upload speeds, consider an NBN 100/40 plan from select providers. Alternatively, if your home is eligible, weigh up an NBN 1000 plan for upload speeds up to 50Mbps.
  • Promo pricing: Most NBN providers offer a discounted rate for new customers. This can make it easier to justify trying out a faster speed tier than the one you need before committing to a higher rate.
  • Regular pricing: If you're looking to stick with a provider for the long run, be sure to factor in more than just the honeymoon. An otherwise-good discount might not be worth the short-term savings once you're paying a lot more for every month.
  • Provider speeds: While most providers offer internet plans at similar speed tiers, the quality of service they offer can vary significantly during peak hours. In addition to an NBN providers’ respective self-reported typical evening download speeds, be sure to see what the ACCC has to say before you sign up.
  • Sign-up costs: The last thing you should consider when looking at Australia internet plans is whether a provider has any additional fees associated with signing up. Plans from providers like Telstra and Optus include a modem (albeit with potential hardware exit fees) while other NBN providers will give you the option of purchasing equipment as needed or bringing your own.

Which NBN provider is the best

For most Aussies though, the "best NBN provider" will vary from person to person and depend on the kind of internet plan you’re looking for and what your needs are. Providers like Spintel, Tangerine and Superloop offer competitive pricing and great speeds. Meanwhile, household names like Telstra and Optus cost more but include NBN modems with 4G backup.

Thanks to the ACCC, there's no shortage of analysis out there about which NBN providers offer the best service. Looking at the data that pits providers against each other helps paint a picture of which one is best when it comes to average download speeds and upload speeds, fewest daily outages, as well as fastest webpage loading times and lowest latency.

Right now, Exetel is our current pick for the best NBN provider. This provider maintained a commanding lead for the ACCC’s December 2022 results, followed by Telstra in second place and Optus in third.

Impressively, Exetel took out the top spot for fastest average download speeds (busy hours and busiest hour) and upload speeds as well as fewest daily outages, with silver medals for webpage loading times and latency.

How much should I pay for NBN?

NBN 50 is the most popular speed tier and the one we recommend most homes start with for comparisons, and you can expect to pay around $70 per month for a competitively priced plan. If that price isn't right for you, there are plenty of options both above and below it.

Without considering promotional pricing, Australian internet plan prices from our comparison engine start at around $35 per month for a bare-bolts satellite NBN 12 plan then go to around a $135 monthly fee for ultrafast NBN 1000 internet plans.

Here's how much you should expect to pay for each NBN speed tier in terms of standard pricing.

  • Satellite NBN - Prices starting from $34.95
  • NBN 12 - Prices start from $59.99
  • NBN 25 - Prices start from $49.99
  • NBN 50 - Prices starting from $64.99
  • NBN 100 - Prices start from $79.99
  • NBN 250 - Prices starting from $99.99
  • NBN 1000 - Prices starting from $135.99

Which NBN provider is the cheapest?

The cheapest NBN providers are consistently Dodo, Spintel and Tangerine. That will change from time to time, as deals and plan pricings change but more often than not, these three providers tend to have the cheapest fixed-line NBN plans available.

Depending on where you live, satellite NBN might be even cheaper than that. Many satellite NBN providers tend to offer low-data Basic I plans between $30 and $40. That said, price isn't everything when it comes Australian internet plans.

If you can get a fixed-line NBN plan instead, we'd recommend doing so. These plans typically start around $40 to $45 per month but are capable of much faster speeds and don't come with data caps that satellite NBN typically has.

What is the best plan for NBN?

Christie Graham, Writer at Reviews.org
Expert Advice

"Most of us are on NBN 50 but you may not need to be. NBN 25 plans are widely available from a range of providers and can comfortably cater to the needs of one to two people."

The best NBN plan is the one that pairs well with your monthly internet budget and the speed needs of your home. It might not be the speed tier you settle on, but NBN 50 is usually the best place to start.

These internet plans are the most popular type of internet plan in our database because they offer a great mix of price and speed. In addition, most homes can scale down to NBN 25 for lesser ’net needs or rev up to NBN 100 (or beyond) if they need more megabytes-per-second.

NBN FAQs

Answering some of the most common questions our readers have about the NBN in Australia.

NBN 25 speeds, no matter the provider, are more than enough to stream Netflix in any quality. Netflix recommends 3Mbps for High Definition (HD 720p) streaming, 5Mbps for Full High Definition (FHD 1080p) streaming and 15Mbps for Ultra High Definition (UHD 4K) streaming.

The question isn't whether 25Mbps is fast enough to stream Netflix, it is. The question is how many other NBN-connected devices and activities are running while you're trying to watch Netflix? If you live alone, you should have no problem streaming Netflix in 4K on NBN 25 but add even one more person to the equation and you will start to notice streaming issues if both people are using the internet at the same time. It's even worse for bigger families and households. The more people connected to one home NBN connection, the slow each of their speeds will become on NBN 25.

In short, NBN 25 is definitely fast enough to stream Netflix in every quality but the more people under your roof, the higher your speed should be to accommodate everyone's internet usage.

If you’re dissatisfied with your internet plan speeds, it may be because your home is connected to the NBN via an older technology like FTTN (Fibre-to-the-Node).

FTTP (Fibre-to-the-Premise) is a full fibre connection that lets you order plan speeds above NBN 100, plus you can safely expect to hit a provider’s self-reported typical evening download speeds without any disclaimers. If you fancy signing up for an NBN 250 or NBN 1000 plan, then follow the link below to find out more about upgrading to FTTP.
